Hut8 Mining releases Q1 results, mines 828 Bitcoins

The Bitfury backed mining company released its operating results for the first time since going public. The company mined 828 Bitcoins in Q1 2018 and added ten new BlackBox data centers. The total comes to 17 data centers drawing 18.7 MW with 128PH/s.

South Africa’s central bank classifies digital assets as a token and not currency

The Central Bank of South Africa is calling digital assets a “cyber-token.” In their view, digital assets do not satisfy the economic requirements of money. The Reserve Bank has created a fintech unit to further research and develop the country's opinion.

Kraken hires former Bush-era prosecutor as general counsel

The San Francisco based exchange has hired Mary Beth Buchanan as general counsel. Buchanan was the first woman and the youngest-ever person appointed US Attorney for the Western District of Pennsylvania. She comes from Bryan Cave and will operate out of New York.

UK regulators launch inquiry into 24 digital asset businesses

The Financial Conduct Authority is investigating 24 firms that may be operating without FCA authorization. While the FCA does not regulate digital assets, they do have authority over any derivatives. They have also opened seven whistleblower reports this year.
